The Darkest Minds Series Reading Order

Good morning! I hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful start to their autumn! I’m keeping busy with preparations for my brother’s wedding next month and editing LORE, my upcoming YA that should hopefully be out Fall 2020/Winter 2021.

Out of curiosity (and, okay, procrastination on aforementioned edits), I was looking at my site analytics and noticed a big uptick in people searching for the series reading order for The Darkest Minds. That totally fits with the amount of questions I get about it on both Twitter and Instagram. I put up an Instagram highlight about it, but I realized it might be nice to have my recommended reading order available over here on my actual website.

Let me start off by saying that there is a ton of flexibility in this, and there’s no one right way to read the series! I’ve worked hard to make sure that all of the material outside of the main novels isn’t necessary to follow the main storyline—my goal with them was to highlight different areas of the TDM world and give you some “off camera” scenes, so to speak.

  1. The Darkest Minds

  2. In Time (novella in the Through the Dark bind-up)

  3. Liam’s mini novella (available for free by subscribing to my newsletter)

  4. Never Fade

  5. Liam’s Short Story (found in the new paperback edition of The Darkest Minds)

  6. Vida’s Short Story (found in the new paperback edition of Never Fade)

  7. Sparks Rise (novella in the Through the Dark bind-up)

  8. In the Afterlight

  9. Clancy’s Short Story (found in the new paperback edition of In the Afterlight)

  10. Beyond the Night (novella in the Through the Dark bind-up)

  11. The Darkest Legacy

When I say the “new paperback edition,” I mean the updated covers that were released in January 2018:

If you’ve seen something called The Rising Dark, that’s a digital bind-up of the short stories found in these editions that my UK publisher has released to UK readers only. My international publishers have all chosen to release these stories in different ways. Some have chosen to release the extras as digital-only or decided to bind up certain stories and not others. If you can’t find a story, or you’d like to see one of them translated and published, my recommendation is to directly contact the publisher for your language/country via social media or email.

TDM Special Editions Virtual Signing!

Before I jump back into my regular blogging schedule, I wanted to let you know about another opportunity to pre-order the TDM special editions. Good Choice Reading is graciously hosting the virtual signing again! I won't be touring for the release of these editions (in fact, you probably won't see me out and about until next fall), so this is your chance to get them signed and personalized. 👍🏻

As a reminder, TDM has a prequel short story centered on Liam and Cole, NF has a prequel story about how Vida came to be with the Children's League, ITA has a story centered on Clancy, and TtD has very special TO BE REVEALED bonus content. I'm DYING to share what it is, because I think you guys will be suuuuper into it. At least I hope you'll be!

These paperbacks will be on sale January 2, 2018 in the United States. I've had a few people ask about translated editions of the short stories, and I wish I had more information for you. They've been offered to the international publishers, and it's up to them about how they want to use them. I'll keep you updated! In the meantime, if you're desperate to get your hands on them and you're outside of the US, Good Choice Reading ships internationally.

The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding Preorder Gift

Hi all!

It's been a while, hasn't it? I've been somewhat better about keeping newsletter subscribers updated (but not by much... I've had deadlines, I swear!) but I really need to check in here more as well!

My new Middle Grade series kicks off on September 5th with The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding! I'm so excited for you guys to read this one--it truly is a product of my intense love of Halloween (and Halloween movies!), spooky tales, curses, and other witchy things. You can start reading an excerpt right now by following this link. It's meant for younger readers but I think--and hope--you guys will all get a kick out of it.

I'm also very happy to report that it's received two starred reviews! 👻

★ An infectious, entertaining series starter... thrilling plot twists will keep even the most savvy readers guessing. Clever, occasionally frightening, and always fun, this will hook plenty.
— Booklist Reviews
★ Darkly delicious... Bracken’s cast is drawn in loving detail, and her twisty plot will keep readers guessing.
— Publishers Weekly

I also want to let you guys know about the preorder gift giveaway that Good Choice Reading is hosting for The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding. If you pre-order a signed copy through GCR (which can be personalized and shipped internationally!!), you'll receive a cute lil'Halloween print of Toad, the catbat. 🎃

You can also pre-order copies of The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding through:

Oh! I almost forgot--do you guys remember my instagram stories about signing copies of Prosper with my doodled ghosts and messages in them? Those are a special limited quantity that will only be available to order through Indie bookstores. I'm trying to pull together a list of all of the stores that ordered them in, but I know for a fact that Books of Wonder has a few available

I will be hitting the road and going out on tour--those dates and details are coming soon!

Extras casting for TDM movie!

I've been very quiet post-WAYFARER's release because I've been busying writing my little heart out and working on a few new projects for you to read! I'm really excited to tell you about them--including THE DREADFUL TALE OF PROSPER REDDING, which is out THIS SEPTEMBER 5th!!--but I wanted to pop in now for a quick TDM movie update!

If you're subscribed to my newsletter, or follow me on social, you already know that we have the Black Betty gang assembled. I am freaking thrilled Skylan Brooks announced he's playing Chubs so I don't have to keep that secret anymore. Phew! It made me tear up to see the four of them in graphics together. I can't believe it's real... 😭

I did promise you guys that I would let you know the second that I heard anything at all about extras casting, and, well, today's the day!

Tour Dates for WAYFARER + TDM in the UK!

Hey y'all! I'm very happy to post the tour dates for WAYFARER next January, and I'm so thrilled I get to do a week of events with my pal Sooz. :) I hope to see you guys there!!

We might be adding one or two more stops, so stay tuned!

In other exciting  news... some of you may know that I've been hoping beyond hope to one day have a UK edition of TDM trilogy. Over the years, I've gotten countless requests for ebooks to be made available, but we weren't able to do it because the North American and Aussie/NZ editions were restricted to those territories. BUT! I'm so, so happy to tell you that Quercus, my amazing UK publisher for PASSENGER and WAYFARER, has picked up the rights to TDM series and those books are on sale TODAY!!

Check out the slightly modified covers:

The One that is FREE FREE FREEEEE!

Okay, lots to cover in this post BUT FIRST:

The Darkest Minds is iBooks' Book of the Week... which means that you can download this 500 page beauty FOR FREE on all of your iOS/Apple devices!! Here is the link to the iBooks page. Go forth! Download! Tell your friends to download! Force it on your family members! ;)

If you're new to the series, or thinking about starting, here's the order:

Book 1: The Darkest Minds

e-novella: In Time

Book 2: Never Fade

e-novella: Sparks Rise

Book 3: In the Afterlight

(The e-novellas are absolutely not required reading, but they do flesh out the world and connect with the main storyline.)

If that isn't enough excitement for you (It is for me--someone bring the smelling salts!), I'm so thrilled and incredibly excited to tell you guys that The Darkest Minds series is debuting at #7 on The New York Times series bestseller list!!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting the series over the last three years--it's been such an incredible journey, and I can't believe that there won't be more books, that I won't get to keep checking in with the gang (aka ruining their young lives). How lucky am I that I not only got to tell a story with characters I love, but also connect with all of you? Thank you for coming on this crazy ride with me.

Next week, I think I'll go ahead and post a FAQ list for the final book and the series, but I still want to give folks another week to finish reading before I potentially spoil them!

Also, if it's of interest, In the Afterlight's playlist is up in full on Spotify! Have yourself a lil'listen:
